Jorge Oteiza

Jorge Oteiza (Orio, 1908- San Sebastián, 2003), is one of the fundamental Basque artists of twentieth-century Spanish art, as well as one of the most influential.
The artistic and personal trajectory of Oteiza was always wrapped in a mythical halo due to its visionary and turbulent nature, and above all due to the fact that, at 1959, Oteiza unexpectedly announced his abandonment of sculpture; an even more astonishing news if we consider that at those moments he was at the peak of his artistic career, with the recent award of the First Sculpture Prize of the Biennial of Sao Paulo at 1957, with exhibitions in different galleries of America and representation contracts in Germany and other places.
Self-taught, Oteiza began by making sculptures within the orbit of expressionism or primitivism that initiated by Gaugin, Picasso or Derain, is developed through Brancusi, Epstein and others. After a long stay in South America, the sculptor is developing theoretically and practically the foundations of his aesthetics, and the "natural" sculptor who was inside, is taking the necessary steps to become the artist who is in some way in control of their mechanisms and tools.
The year 1996 Oteiza and the Government of Navarre ratify the agreement on the fate of their work within the Oteiza Museum Foundation. The 9 of April of 2003, Oteiza passed away in San Sebastián. Since then, different exhibitions of his work have been carried out, culminating in the one organized by the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, in its headquarters and in the Frank Lloyd Wright building of the 5 avenue in New York, as well as in the Reina Museum Sofia of Madrid.
