The interaction between positive and negative space is fundamental in In Between, the chair designed by Sami Kallio. Its back and side panels provide concrete form and support, but the forms are created equally by the spaces between them.
Kallio's expertise in the traditional craftsmanship of carpentry is evident in the chair. In Between is produced using two classic techniques: compression molding (making it light and thin, but strong) and wood turning (a technique that uses a lathe to achieve greater detail). Sami Kallio, with his strong foundation in traditional Scandinavian woodworking techniques and his eye for ingenious details, has proven to be the ideal candidate to design the first wooden chair in the collection of & Tradition.
