Harry Bertoia (1915 - 1978) was an Italian sculptor, university professor, and furniture designer. Inventor of form and enriching furniture design with the introduction of a new material: he turned industrial wire rods into a design icon.
Educated at Detroit Technical College, Detroit School of Arts and Crafts, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, he taught metal arts at Cranbrook. His awards include the Medal of Craftsmanship from the American Institute of Architects, as well as the Gold Medal from the AIA.
