George Nakashima (1905-1990) was born in Washington and graduated from his hometown university in architecture at 1930. He started working as a mural painter and designer in New York to later move to Paris.
His personal style shows an amalgam of influences. He was passionate about the decorative effect of knots in wood and the uneven grain in the cross section of it; he also used the rough edge of the untrimmed tree to give it more effect. He received the gold medal of crafts from the American Institute of Architects and the Hazlett Prize.
