Born in Elizabeth, New Jersey at 1955, and studying at the Cooper Union in New York. His first solo exhibition was in New York at 1982. He has traveled extensively in the Middle East, India, South America and Morocco. Taaffe lived and worked in Naples in the 1988-91 period. His work is present in numerous public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R Museum Guggenheim and the Reina Sofía Museum, Madrid. In the 2000 year, the IVAM museum in Valencia organized a retrospective on his work. In the year 2001 an extensive study about his work was presented at the Galleria Civica in Trento, Italy. At 2004, the Modern Art Gallery in San Marino (Italy) presented a study on his paintings and drawings. In 2008, the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg organized a retrospective, the life of forms in art: 1980-2008 Paintings. Philip Taaffe currently lives and works in New York and West Cornwall, Connecticut.
