Richard Sapper (1932-2015), son of a painter and himself a very talented artist, studied from 1952 to 1956 at the University of Munich Business Administration. After completing his studies, he worked in the design department of Mercedes-Benz in Stuttgart. He moved to Milan in 1958, working for renowned companies such as La Rinascente or Alessi, as well as for various design studios, such as Giovanni Ponti, Alberto Rosselli and especially Marco Zanuso.
At 1970 he founded his own design studio in Stuttgart, at the same time he started his consulting work for Fiat and Pirelli. At 1980 he was the global product design executive advisor for IBM Corporation, as well as the group's corporate image.
He is seen as a politically engaged person, understanding design as a social and political task.
