Harry Bertoia (1915 - 1978) was an Italian sculptor, university professor and furniture designer. Inventor of the form and an enrichment of the design of furniture with the introduction of a new material: it turned the industrial bars of wire into a design icon.
Educated at the Detroit Technical College, the Detroit School of Arts and Crafts and the Cranbrook Art Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, he taught metal arts at Cranbrook. His prizes include the crafts medal of the American Institute of Architects, as well as the AIA Gold Medal.
